Toby Keith Fans Are Emotional After His Daughter Accepts Honorary Degree on His Behalf

The University of Oklahoma honored a lifelong Oklahoma resident and die-hard Sooners fan at their annual May commencement ceremony.

On May 11, late country icon Toby Keith was given an honorary degree from the university. Toby sadly died at 62 years old on February 5, after being diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2021. But his daughter, Krystal Keith, was in attendance to accept the incredible honor on his behalf.

"Toby learned he would be receiving an honorary degree from @uofoklahoma last fall, and yesterday, @krystalkeith accepted it on his behalf at the commencement ceremony. Congratulations to all the OU graduates,” a post on Keith's Instagram page read with phots of Krystal at the ceremony.

Fans offered heartfelt wishes and support in the comments section as soon as they saw the photos. "So happy he knew in advance about this recognition, congratulations Toby ❤️and Krystal thank you," one wrote. "He was Oklahoma proud. So happy he was honored by the School he loved and supported," another said.

University of Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz, Jr. expressed his gratitude to Krystal and Toby's wife, Tricia, for attending the ceremony. "So incredibly grateful to Tricia and Krystal Keith for joining us Saturday to celebrate the impact and legacy of @tobykeith with an honorary degree from @UofOklahoma Miss you and each and every day, TK," he wrote on X.

Toby had been a long-time supporter of The University of Oklahoma, often attending sporting events at the school. When he passed, the university recognized Toby's dedicated to the state in a touching tribute.

"As a lifelong Sooner, Toby’s passion for the crimson and cream made him a cherished figure within Sooner Nation, where he proudly shared his love for the university and its community," Harroz said. "His absence leaves a void not only in the country music landscape but also in the hearts of all who were touched by his music and his kindness. Personally, I will miss Toby’s laughter, warmth, and everlasting love for the University of Oklahoma."
