Titans' Kevin Byard fined over $10k for Star stunt
Sunday was a day for re-enacting some of the more memorable touchdown celebrations — ones that came before the NFL relaxed its rules on such things.
Saints’ receiver Michael Thomas recreated Joe Horn’s hidden-cellphone celebration in New Orleans’ win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon, and on Monday night, Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard also channeled a standout receiver.
In the first quarter of the Titans’ win against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, Byard intercepted Dak Prescott in the end zone, then sprinted to midfield, where he stood on the Cowboys’ star, arms spread wide, just as Terrell Owens did in 2000.
It was a costly move.
The NFL has fined Byard, a third-round pick in 2016 who had a league-best eight interceptions last year, $10,026 for his stunt, via ESPN.
Byard’s fine, while steep, was small compared to Owens’ punishment 18 years ago: the Hall of Famer, then with San Francisco, was suspended one game by coach Steve Mariucci, and fined a week’s pay, or $24,294. Owens had celebrated on the Dallas star twice, after scoring touchdowns.
