Titans cut WR Adam Humphries, former Saints free agent target

One player the New Orleans Saints targeted in free agency not too long ago is on the market. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Thursday that the Tennessee Titans have released wide receiver Adam Humphries after two underwhelming seasons, having signed him to a four-year, $36 million contract with them back in 2019.
And Humphries very well could have joined the Saints instead. Sean Payton said as much at the time, confirming reports that the then-Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver’s price had gotten too high for New Orleans to pay. Injuries limited him in Tennessee, and Humphries ultimately appeared in just 19 of 32 possible regular season games. He totaled just 60 catches with the Titans after averaging 54.8 receptions per year in Tampa Bay.
Would he be worth checking in on again as a free agent? Sure. Humphries turns 28 this summer and could have a long career ahead of him as a slot specialist if his body holds up (he missed only four games in his first four seasons). Adding him to the mix at a discount from what the Titans paid him would do a lot to keep players like Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Jake Lampman further down the depth chart on the practice squad.
But it’s ultimately going to come down to money and whether the Saints worry his absences are the start of a trend. He wouldn’t be the first player to have his career cut short by injuries, and New Orleans has a tougher salary cap situation to iron out than most teams. Given how banged-up their receiving corps was last season, though, it might be worth to explore all avenues of improvement.
