The sinking of the RMS Titanic has long had a hold on the popular imagination.

The catastrophe has led to numerous books and documentaries, various undersea expeditions and one blockbuster movie.

Even if you are familiar with the story of the British passenger liner — which sank in 1912 and led to the deaths of about 1,500 people — it’s unlikely you have ever had as intimate a view of the ship as the one offered in a new COSI exhibition.

“Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” — which opens at COSI on Saturday — presents over 200 actual artifacts that have been taken from the site of the sunken ship. The exhibition continues through Sept. 2.

The artifacts are presented as part of an elaborate, immersive exhibition that includes recreations of actual rooms aboard the ship as they once existed.

The lives of a number of Titanic passengers and crew members are also recounted in the exhibition.

Non-flash photography is permitted.

Timed tickets to “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition,” which include general admission, cost $45, or $43 or senior citizens, $40 for ages 2 through 12, $15 for teachers with valid ID, $43 for members of the military and free for ages 2 and younger.
