Tina Turner Celebrates Her 'Second Chance at Life' in 80th Birthday Message to Fans

When a legend speaks the truth, you listen — and we could all stand to hear Tina Turner’s 80^th birthday message. The musical icon and actress took to social media on Tuesday to share a video in celebration of her milestone birthday and, no big surprise here, she looked fantastic. Even better? She knew she did. Or, to be more accurate, does.

On Turner’s official Twitter account, a video montage showed fellow celebrities (including Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, and Deborah Cox) sending Turner birthday wishes. Also, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical casts from around the globe alternated singing happy birthday to the play’s inspiration. For Instagram, Turner’s account shared a message directly from Turner to her fans. “Yes, I’m 80. How did I think I would be at 80? Not like this. How is this?” Turner started, laughing, “Well, I look great, I feel good, I’ve gone through some very serious sicknesses that I’m overcoming. So, it’s like having a second chance at life. I’m happy to be an 80-year-old woman.”

How refreshing, right? Growing older isn’t something to be resented or feared. It’s something to be appreciated and celebrated. As Turner’s video message suggests, it’s a privilege denied to many. Turner knows this well since she suffered a life-threatening stroke in 2013, followed by about with intestinal cancer in 2016. In 2017, facing total kidney failure, her husband Erwin Bach donated a kidney for her operation. Now, she embraces aging. And that outlook is just another reason to be like Tina!

The fact that Turner is still thriving at 80 doesn’t just have her feeling grateful. Rapper and producer Missy Elliott gave a nod to Turner’s impact on the music industry with her own social media birthday tribute. “We Celebrate your 80^th today! It’s so IMPORTANT for us to KNOW OUR HISTORY in music because of artists like #TinaTurner who KICKED DOWN DOOR & left them open for artists like MYSELF & MOST of your FAVS.”

Hear, hear! Happy 80^th birthday to a true legend. Here’s hoping we have even a fraction of her moxie at, well, any age. And, TBH, we wouldn’t complain about having those legs, either.
