Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Roast Live Variety Special Emmy Nominees in 'Weekend Update'-Style Presentation Bit

The pair co-anchored the popular segment on 'Saturday Night Live' from 2004 to 2006

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are bringing laughs on TV’s biggest night!

The pair had a Saturday Night Live Weekend Update reunion on stage at the 2023 Emmy Awards on Monday. Fey, 53, and Poehler, 52, appeared behind the iconic Weekend Update news desk to offer jokes about each of Monday's nominees for outstanding live variety special.

"We've reached the stage in life where we'll only present awards sitting down," Fey joked. The pair went on to roast each nominee, starting with the most recent Academy Awards ceremony in March 2023.

"The only show that's longer than when they air Titanic with commercials on TBS, the Oscars," Fey chirped. The pair also made jokes about Chris Rock's 2023 standup special Selective Outrage — "Chris could be here tonight but if he wins we'll accept on his behalf because we miss getting Emmys," — and Super Bowl LVII's Rihanna halftime show, which Fey called "the concert so good it got us all pregnant."

Poehler then poked fun at the 2023 Tony Awards for "celebrating the best in musicals that were based on movies which will probably be movies again," (which Fey quickly pointed out is totally fine, as she promotes the musical movie version of Mean Girls) and made an EGOT reference while introducing Elton John's nominee, his Farewell From Dodger Stadium concert, which ultimately won the award and vaulted the music industry legend to EGOT status.

The stars — who are currently on the road for their "Tina Fey & Amy Poehler: Restless Leg Tour" — co-anchored Saturday Night Live's popular Weekend Update segment from 2004 to 2006.

Since then, the pair have hosted the Golden Globes four times together in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2021. They also costarred together in Baby Mama, Sisters and Wine Country.

In 2021, Poehler, 52, opened up about her decades-long friendship with Fey on Sunday TODAY after the pals virtually co-hosted the Golden Globes together that year.

"I think it's rare and wonderful to meet somebody who's your friend who also works the same way that you do. Because we kind of trained at the same places and work the same way it's so easy," Poehler, who left SNL in 2008, said of Fey, 53.

She continued, "We share a very similar vocabulary — especially when you're about to go do the Golden Globes or about to do live television for the first time or you're trying something new it feels really good to have somebody who knows your timing [and] your rhythm."

The pair also reflected on how they maintained their long-lasting friendship in a 2015 interview with Glamour. "We don't see each other very often," Fey, who left SNL in 2006, quipped at the time.

"That's right," Poehler chimed in, laughing. "It's like a good marriage. My mom always says it's very important to have people in your life who knew you when. The older you get, the more you treasure that idea of someone knowing your family and where you came from, and being around during these times and these times."

Poehler said that as neither of the stars have sisters, they've instead "rented them."

"We found sisters," Fey clarified.

Ahead of Monday's event, PEOPLE announced that the cast of The Sopranos and Cheers would come together to honor the last 75 years of television. Other legendary TV show reunions were also expected.
