Timothée Chalamet Stars in Your Next Netflix Obsession: The King

There’s a new ruler on the Netflix throne. Timothée Chalamet stars in Netflix’s new film The King and the trailer goes all out on its medieval atmosphere. The film is slated to hit a slew of festivals before it hits Netflix this fall.

Chalamet plays King Henry V of England — or Hal — the real King of England who reigned from 1413-1422. It’s an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Henriad plays, with Hal leading the country after the death of his volatile father, played in the film by Ben Mendelsohn. The real life monarch is most famously known for his participation in England’s Hundred Years War and his battlefield successes. The Netflix film seeks to highlight the young King’s early reign, coronation and even his paranoia around the court and his newfound role.

“A new chapter of my life has begun,” Chalamet utters in a rasping, deep voice in the trailer. “I’ve been forced to rely upon the counsel of whose loyalty I question every waking moment.” It’s an eerie first look into the dark world England and the young King inhabit in the 1400s. And director David Michôd appears more than capable of rendering that atmosphere. In his director’s statement Michôd shared, “Swords and horses were never my thing. But, the more we talked and the deeper I researched, the more excited I was by the idea of rendering the Middle Ages — its dirt, its brutality, its precariousness of life and death, its sheer other-worldliness — in a way that felt raw and human.”

Chalamet is poised for yet another great year. After earning his first Oscar nomination with 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, the young actor will next appear as Laurie in Greta Gerwig’s iteration of Little Women this December along with this Netflix vehicle. Chalamet previously worked with Gerwig on her directorial debut Lady Bird. The King also stars Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Pattinson and Joel Edgerton (who also co-wrote the film) and Sean Harris. There’s no official release date yet for the film, but ready the battlefield as The King rides for Netflix this fall.
