Timothée Chalamet Says He Was Rejected From ‘Bigger’ Projects Before Getting His Break

Timothée Chalamet is currently competing with the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington and Daniel Kaluuya for an Oscar, but there was a time when he was just trying to land a job.

During an interview with rapper Frank Ocean for VMANmagazine’s “A Day in the Life” issue, the 22-year-old breakout star opens up about his life before landing roles in this year’s acclaimed films, Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird.

“I was up for bigger, more commercial projects, but I didn’t get them,” he reveals. “They just didn’t choose me, and it’s been gratifying, coming from more of a place of artistry and not just pure exposure.

Despite landing an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Elio in Call Me By Your Name, Chalamet says it’s his role as Kyle Scheible that gets him recognized most often.

“I actually get more people stopping me for Lady Bird, and going, ‘Is that the d**chebag from Lady Bird?’ So that’s awesome,” he quips.

Calling himself a “nostalgist,” Chalamet talks about how films made in present time suffer from the limitations modern technology provides.

“What a tragedy for movies now that if you want to be contemporary, phones have to be involved, with texting and FaceTime,” he notes. “I don’t know if [the characters in] Call Me By Your Name would ever have that relationship if there was passive-aggressive commenting and ‘likes.’ They actually had to talk, figure each other out, and struggle with their emotions.

Chalamet’s issue of VMAN hits newsstands on Feb. 22.

In the meantime, check out how the young actor recently bonded with fellow rising star, Tiffany Haddish, and opened up to ET about the experience.
