Timothée Chalamet Recalls “Disorienting” Armie Hammer Accusations While Making Cannibal Love Story ‘Bones and All’

Timothée Chalamet is speaking out about his experience of preparing to star in Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal love story Bones and All just as similar allegations were being leveled against Armie Hammer, his Call Me by Your Name co-star, back in 2021.

“Disorienting is a good word,” Chalamet told GQ in a magazine story about keeping his focus while set to appear alongside Taylor Russell in Guadagnino’s drama about first love between two cannibal drifters in 1980s Middle America, only to see sexual abuse allegations, including cannibalistic fetishism, against Hammer appear during preproduction. The film was released November 2022.

“I mean, what were the chances that we’re developing this thing?” Chalamet added about social media trolls claiming Bones and All had been inspired by the unfolding scandal around Hammer. “It made me feel like: Now I’ve really got to do this … Because this is actually based on a book,” he recalled.

Earlier this year, the Los Angeles District Attorney decided against going forward with charges against Hammer stemming from a 2021 Los Angeles Police Department investigation into sexual assault allegations, due to a lack of firm evidence.

In the GQ profile, Chalamet also talked about attaining Hollywood fame, but at the cost of his personal privacy.

“You start going on Instagram, seeing people from your high school getting married, friends having kids, and you start going: This balls-to-the-wall thing, even at this amazing level I’m at that probably couldn’t have gone better. You still start wondering: How long till you have to change?” Chalamet said, while conceding the demands of celebrity culture have had an impact.

“I can’t say that this stuff doesn’t matter, because my intense fandom has led me to where I am,” he added.
