Buckle up, because Timeless wants to take you on the most exciting roller coaster ride of them all: history.

The new NBC series, which premieres Oct. 3, is an action-packed adventure story about a history professor (Abigail Spencer), a soldier (Matt Lanter), and a scientist (Malcolm Barrett) chasing a time-traveling criminal through different eras. In the first episode, they’re sent back to the day of the Hindenburg disaster in 1937.

As the poster and trailer show, this adventure will take viewers back to key moments in history around the globe. Each episode is set in a different time period, and along the way, the team will meet famous people and engage in major events, like the Lincoln assassination.

“I think history is not this dusty academic thing. I think it’s visceral and sometimes violent and funny and endlessly fascinating,” co-creator Eric Kripke (Supernatural) tells Yahoo TV. “It’s really the story of where we all came from.”

Kripke and co-creator Shawn Ryan (The Shield) took inspiration from Quantum Leap, Back to the Future, and Steven Spielberg movies.

“I started thinking about those classic Spielberg movies that could be grounded and real and have stakes, but also have a sense of wonder and optimism,” Ryan says. “You want to put your heroes in these impossible situations and see them use their skill, their pluck, and their guts to get out of it and save the day for everyone.”

Journeying to these different eras is a huge production challenge — Kripke jokes that it’s “completely insane” — but the creators hope viewers will be wowed every week.

“We’re going to have a stunningly epic and visual show,” Kripke promises. “It’s going to be the best-looking show on network television.”

Timeless premieres Monday, Oct. 3, at 10 p.m. on NBC.
