Time to stuff yourself with grape leaves, gyros, moussaka and more at Akron Greek Festival

The Annunciation Akron Greek Festival is always a great party to look forward to in late September, with the festivities focusing on wonderful ethnic food.

The celebration of Greek fare will run Sept. 21 through 23 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in downtown Akron at 29 S. Union St. Hours for feasting are 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. for the inside dinner buffet Thursday through Saturday, or 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday for the outdoor tent buffet.

Greek pastries also are offered for sale inside.

Returning to the menu are entrees such as a lamb shank dinner, lamb chops dinner, souzoukakia (Greek-style meatballs) with rice, chicken souvlaki, plaki baked fish dinner, moussaka (beef and eggplant lasagna) and pastitsio baked pasta. Entrees cost from $11 to $19.

Sides including pita, village fries, village salad, dolmathes (stuffed grapes leaves) with meat, spanakopita and more range from $1 to $16. Sandwiches are chicken souvlaki and gyros for $9.

Six varieties of Greek pastries plus rice pudding also are offered for dessert. Pastry samplers and party packs also are available for sale online, as are entree, sandwich and side dish party packs.

Live at the festival, Greek music Friday and Saturday night will include bands inside and outside as well as a vocalist in the pastry and coffee shop area. Entertainers are George Karas, Aegean Odyssey, Dimitri Kountis and bouzouki instrumentalist Dimitri Kantarzis, who plays a long-necked, plucked lute.

Youth folk dancers also will perform at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. each evening in the tent.

Church tours also will be offered at 12:30 and 7:30 p.m. each festival day. Meet in the church.
