Tim Wallach re-lives the '80s on 'Old Baseball Cards'
When we opened old packs of cards earlier this year with Don Mattingly, we found his good friend and longtime bench coach Tim Wallach. And when the opportunity came to open some baseball cards with Wallach, we had to hope he’d find his buddy Donny Baseball.
Spoiler alert: He didn’t.
Alas, this brand new episode of “Old Baseball Cards” — our baseball-card driven walk down memory lane — is like a parade of ’80s names you might remember. From Darryl Strawberry, John Kruk and Tim Flannery to Vance Law, Larry Parrish and Ron Hassey.
Wallach has been with Mattingly since 2010, first with the Dodgers and now with the Marlins. But originally, he was a star for the Montreal Expos in the ’80s, earning five All-Star nods, three Gold Gloves and two Silver Sluggers. He was good enough in those days to earn a spot in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
In this episode, we open Topps packs from 1987 and 1989, to coincide with some of Wallach’s best seasons. He finished fourth in MVP voting in 1987 and led the league in doubles in both ’87 and ’89.
