The secret to Kate Middleton’s well-maintained curtain bangs is lighting up TikTok.

The Princess of Wales, 41, debuted face-framing fringe in September and has stepped out with the style several times since. In a viral video viewed over three million times on TikTok, a professional hairstylist speculated that Princess Kate locks in the look with the simplest of tools: hairspray — and lots of it!

“Watch her hair. The wind blows, her hair doesn't move at all,” TikToker Bekah_and_co commented as footage rolled of Kate visiting a father’s group in November 2023. In the fall, the Princess of Wales joined a meeting of the "Dadvengers” in Arnos Grove, London, to highlight the important role that dads play in their children’s earliest years. Kate wore her center-parted bangs with soft waves for the casual outing, which included a walk in the park, and the pro stylist pointed out how the look stayed sleek.

“She uses tons of hairspray to keep her hair in place, to keep her bangs in place,” Bekah said. “So if you want bangs, and you live in a windy city or humid city, you have to use product in order to keep them still.”

“Southern women have been doing this for decades a la Dolly Parton,” one commenter joked.

While Princess Kate’s new ‘do was fresh for fall, she’s had plenty of practice with bangs in the past. The royal previously sported fringe at her 2005 graduation from St. Andrews University, where she and Prince William first met, as well as in 2012 and 2015.

The subtle style “adds a certain softness around her face and lift to her hair,” says Michael Van Clarke, who styled Princess Diana’s hair in the 1980s. “Fringes do need a bit more styling maintenance, but they’re very versatile,” he tells PEOPLE.

Because the bangs aren’t blunt, Kate can switch up her look by pulling the longer layers back. The Princess of Wales swept her hair under the Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara at the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace in December, and wore her tresses half-up for the royal family’s annual walk to church on Christmas.

Last Monday, Princess Kate and Prince William stepped out in Sandringham for the outdoor stroll to St. Mary Magdalene with their kids Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, where the mom and daughter were holiday hair twins. Charlotte rocked her signature look — two small braids tied back with a bow and the rest of her hair flowing — while Kate wore a two-braid half-updo and topped the look with a fascinator.

It wasn’t the first time that Princess Kate took hair inspo from her only daughter, either. In 2019, Kate had her hair in Charlotte's go-to style at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. During an outing in Cumbria the same year, the royal mom admitted that her hairstyling skills could use some improvement complimenting two little girls on their "pretty" braided hairdos.

“I tried to do a plait with Charlotte this morning, and it didn’t really work very well,” Kate said at the time.

Princess Kate and Princess Charlotte (whose locks are longer than ever!) had an ultimate matching moment with at King Charles’ coronation in May, coordinating in knotted chignons with silver floral headpieces by Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen.

The toppers thoughtfully nodded to the past, specifically to the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth. The three-dimensional silver and crystal leaf headpiece worn by the Princess of Wales, which was a larger headtopper than Charlotte’s, looked strikingly similar to the ones worn by the late Queen's maids at her coronation.

"If they did take inspiration from those ornaments, it was a nice way to give Kate something that stood out visually while still reinforcing her current role as a supporter of the King and Queen," Lauren Kiehna, writer at The Court Jeweller blog, told PEOPLE.
