Tiger Woods announces minor offseason knee surgery, expects to play in October

Tiger Woods announced on Twitter on Tuesday that he is recovering from minor offseason knee surgery and expects to return to practice soon.

This is at least the fifth surgery Woods has undergone on his knees with the 43-year-old also having undergone at least three on his back.

Earlier in August, Woods withdrew from The Northern Trust after one round due to a mild oblique strain and returned a week later to shoot 7-under at the BMW Championship, tied for 37th. He failed to qualify for the Tour Championship, which he won in 2018.

Dr. Vern Cooley performed the procedure, which was officially deemed an arthroscopic surgery to repair minor cartilage damage in his left knee. He has operated on Woods before, notably to repair his torn ACL and double stress fracture in his left tibia in 2008.

Woods expects to play in Japan in October

As a sign that the surgery truly is minor and that’s not just positive spin, Woods said he still plans to compete in the Zozo Championship in Tokyo, which kicks off on Oct. 26.

Just days before the new PGA Tour event, Woods will compete in an exhibition game of skins against Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama. The championship is not a trip he’ll want to miss either, since it will carry a national record $9.75 million purse.

Woods currently sits at 81 PGA Tour wins, one behind Sam Snead's all-time record. He's also three majors behind Jack Nicklaus for the most coveted golf record.
