Golf legend Tiger Woods was hospitalized with serious injuries Tuesday morning after being involved in a single-car crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, said the 15-time major winner “suffered multiple leg injuries” and was undergoing surgery.
The 45-year-old Woods was in California for a shoot with Golf Digest, the magazine said.
During an afternoon news conference, sheriff’s office officials said Woods was conscious when he was pulled from the 2021 Genesis after the rollover accident in which he hit two signs, and that a pry bar and an ax were used to free him from the vehicle.
Initial reports indicated that fire crews had to use the jaws of life to get Woods out of the vehicle after the early-morning accident, but that was later corrected by officials who said that the jaws of life were not used to free him.
The crash occurred on an stretch of sweeping, downhill roadway that is known for traffic accidents. Woods was “calm and lucid” sitting in the driver’s seat after the crash, according to a deputy who was one of the first to arrive at the scene. The deputy said Woods was wearing a seat belt.
The sheriff said there were no signs that Wood was impaired.

Before news of the accident broke, former NBA player Dwyane Wade posted an Instagram video of the two joking around on the golf course on Monday.
Recently, Woods underwent a microdiscectomy procedure to remove a pressurized disc fragment that was pinching a nerve. He told CBS on Sunday that he was awaiting results from an upcoming MRI before he would be able to return to training. He’s had multple back injuries throughout his career.
“I’m feeling fine, little bit stiff,” Woods told Jim Nantz. “Have one more MRI scheduled to see if the annulus has scarred over finally, and then I can start doing more activities. Still in the gym, still doing the mundane stuff that you have to do for rehab, the little things before you can start gravitating toward something a little more.”
Messages from celebrities started pouring in on social media after the news of the accident broke.

Tiger Woods is my favorite athlete of all time. He's the athlete I talked the most about with my dad. My mom loves to talk about Tiger. Derrick Thomas is the greatest athlete I was close friends with. I hope Tiger is OK. Damn.
