EXCLUSIVE: Scott Kennedy’s Falling Forward Films has acquired U.S. theatrical rights to the supernatural thriller Queen of Bones, starring Julia Butters (The Fabelmans), Jacob Tremblay (Room), Martin Freeman (Fargo) and Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black), ahead of its February domestic premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, with plans to release the film in theaters this year.

A TIFF 2023 title directed by Robert Budreau (Born to be Blue), the film tells the story of twin siblings Lily (Butters) and Sam (Tremblay), who live at a remote homestead with their widowed father, Malcolm (Freeman), a violinmaker in 1931 Oregon. When Lily and Sam find a spell book in the cellar, they begin to suspect a connection between their mother’s death and dark forces in the woods. They then embark on a dangerous mission to force their father and his friend, Ida May (Schilling), to reveal the truth.

Based on an original screenplay by Michael Burgner (The Darkest Corner of Paradise), Queen of Bones was produced by Appian Way, Lumanity Productions and Productivity Media, with Productivity Media fully financing the film. Producers include Appian Way’s Jennifer Davisson and Michael Hampton; Budreau through his Lumanity banner; Ryan Reaney; and Productivity Media’s William G. Santor and Doug Murray. The film marked a reunion for Budreau and the Productivity team following their work together on titles including Delia’s Gone, Stockholm, and Born to be Blue.

Stated Budreau on the acquisition, “I’m thrilled to be working with Falling Forward in sharing Queen of Bones with US audiences and showcasing the great performances by our talented cast.”

Added Falling Forward’s Founder and CEO, Kennedy: “Queen of Bones is a remarkably elevated genre story that can play really big, which is why we believe it deserves, and will have, a wide theatrical release later this year. We were captivated with this film, which is so distinguished in its own voice, after its world premiere in Toronto and were relentless to get it on the Falling Forward slate. We’re honored to be a part of the film’s journey to captivating audiences in theaters across the nation.”

CAA Media Finance brokered the domestic distribution deal. Radiant Films International is handling worldwide rights.
