Thousands remain without electricity. Most will be restored Wednesday. Details here

Some 11,455 electric customers throughout Mississippi are still without electricity after the state has been pummeled with a series of storms in the past few weeks, including a Sunday EF-3 tornado that killed one person and injured nearly two dozen people in Jasper County.

According to Entergy Mississippi, which is the electric provider for much of the affected area, most of the remaining outages are in Hinds and Warren counties. Officials said they are hopeful that they will have most of the outages restored by Wednesday evening, with a few remaining for Thursday. The restoration time for the remaining customers was not specified for Thursday.

"Entergy shareholders donated $20,000 to the American Red Cross to support the cooling center and help customers through this difficult time," Entergy said in a statement. "Some locations are available for overnight stays. Thus far, the Red Cross has provided overnights stays for 22 individuals, served more than 1,684 meals and provided relief supplies to 243 households."

Jackson city officials said cooling stations setup throughout the city will remain open until power is fully restored.

A telephone pole on Winter Street in Jackson, MIss., snapped, crashing a transformer to the ground when severe weather moved through central Mississippi last year. Storms in recent weeks have caused similar issues throughout Central Mississippi.
