If you’re planning on hosting or attending a Super Bowl party for Feb. 12, chances are chicken wings will be part of the festivities.

Snacking on wings have become as much a part of Super Bowl Sunday as friendly wagers and rating the commercials, according to Laura Andrews, owner of It’s a Wing Thing, 5120 Spooner Drive in Rockford.

“For as long as I can remember, it’s wings and football,” Andrews said.

The days leading up to the big game are an especially busy time for Andrews, who recommends calling well ahead of time to place a large order of wings.

“We say if it’s like over 100 wings, we’ll need a day in advance,” she said. "Most of our regular customers know to call the day before and place an order.”

Most popular flavors at It’s a Wing Thing are Mango Habenaro and Moonshine BBQ, according to Andrews.

Baked Wings owner Scott Frank and his business partner, Bryan Suh, are gearing up for what is expected to be their busiest day since their restaurant at 6390 E. Riverside Blvd. opened last November.

Frank expects to sell as many as 10,000 bone-in chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday, double the volume the restaurant sells on a busy Saturday.

“There’s no order too large that we will not be able to handle,” Frank said. “The Super Bowl for the NFL is kind of like our Super Bowl as well. We’re hoping for a legendary day sales and volume-wise and we can’t wait to put smiles on the faces of people in town.”

“That’s definitely the best way to do it,” Suh said. “With so many different options that we have, it takes a long time for someone to spend over the phone, so it’s very difficult to do that. It slows everyone down.”
