Jazz Pensacola’s Jazz Gumbo

The Hiding Place The Musical

7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 and 19; 7 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 24 through Sept. 14. The REX Theatre, 18 N. Palafox St. The Hiding Place relates the true story of Corrie ten Boom who, together with her sister, Betsie, and father, Casper, hid Jews in their home during the Nazi occupation of Holland in World War II. The dynamic cast is comprised of local performers of all ages, including Angel Award-winning singer Alisha Burke (Best Performing Artist, 2021) and singer and recording artist James Strasburg. Palafox St. This week’s Saenger Summer Movie Series feature will be Shaun of the Dead, a 2004 zombie comedy film directed by Edgar Wright and written by Wright and Simon Pegg. Pegg stars as Shaun, a downtrodden salesman in London who is caught in a zombie apocalypse with his friend Ed (Nick Frost). Jefferson St. Little Wars is an acclaimed all-female drama is set in a country home in the French Alps during the second World War. A unique dinner party unites celebrated writers Agatha Christie, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, along with a mysterious guest. Based in Los Angeles by way of Atlanta, Stone made his television debut on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" in 2013 and in the same year was selected to the prestigious "New Faces" roster of the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Palafox St. This week’s Saenger Summer Movie Series feature will be The Big Lebowski, a 1998 crime comedy film written, produced and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a Los Angeles slacker and avid bowler. He is assaulted as a result of mistaken identity, then learns that a millionaire, also named Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston), was the intended victim. Rated R. Tickets: $5. 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27. O'Riley's Irish Pub, 321 S. Palafox St. The Bartender Championship will feature up to 12 bartenders competing for the top prize. Each bartender will make a unique cocktail with a special ingredient. Awards for first, second and third place will be determined by a panel of judges. There will also be an audience favorite prize. The winning cocktails may become available on the O’Riley’s menu for a limited time. Tickets include several samples of all cocktails prepared by the bartenders and sponsors. $25. Blues on the Bay

6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27. Community Maritime Park Hunter Amphitheater, 301 W. Main St. This free concert series is one of the most popular events for locals and visitors to spend the final hours of their weekend enjoying great music with family and friends in a great atmosphere. Concert spectators are invited to bring coolers and lawn chairs. Guests of all ages are encouraged to enjoy the cool breeze of the bay while listening and dancing to some of the region's best musical talent. This week features the Bay Bridge Band. 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27. Saenger Theatre, 118 S. Palafox St. KC and the Sunshine Band are still as popular today as they were when they first danced into the music scene 50 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, giving us an impressive string of hits like “Get Down Tonight” and “That’s The Way (I Like It).” With sales of over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards, and an American Music Award, the band was one of the most progressive of the 70s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music.
