Jay-Z and Beyoncé have already proven they are one of the most powerful couples in Hollywood. The dynamic duo have built a music and fashion empire, established themselves as social activists and fostered the next generation of young talent. All this while they grew their family to five when Sir and Rumi Carter joined big sis Blue Ivy in 2017.

The Carters, who have been brutally honest about overcoming obstacles in their relationship, have just come off a professionally blockbuster year. It’s hard to believe their globally sold out On The Run II Tour, critically acclaimed collaborative Everything Is Love album and Beyoncé’s mind-blowing performance at Coachella all took place in 2018. Which is why in 2019, Beyoncé and Jay-Z are keeping things close to home, but that certainly doesn’t mean they aren’t working.

Their status as tastemakers and pop culture icons will continue throughout the year while they each pursue individual projects. Beyoncé will be promoting the live-action film, The Lion King, while Jay-Z will headline a major anniversary concert at Woodstock.

Every update on the Carters, big or small, is guaranteed to make headlines, so let’s take a closer look at what the they are up to this year.

They accepted the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Awards.

The couple were honored with the Vanguard Award at the 30th annual GLAAD Awards in March. During their joint acceptance speech, Jay-Z honored his mother who received the honor the previous year. But it was Beyoncé tearful tribute to her late uncle, “I want to dedicate this award to my Uncle Johnny, the most fabulous gay man who help raised me and my sister,” she said. “He lived his truth and he was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country was not accepting. His battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences of my life. I’m hopeful that his struggle served to open pathways for other young people to live more freely.”

They celebrated the one and only Diana Ross.

Everyone who’s anyone was at Diana Ross’ 75th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Palladium in March. The legendary diva celebrated her special day surrounded by a few hundred of her closest friends and family, including daughter Tracee Ellis Ross, Sean Combs and even Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian. With so many stars, there were bound to be unforgettable memories to be made, but the moment that made news the next day was the when Beyoncé serenaded the Motown legend with her rendition of “Happy Birthday.” One legend honoring another. We got chills!

Queen Bey takes over The Lion King.

Judging by the star power Disney has recruited, the live-action adaptation of the 1994 animated classic, The Lion King, is going to be epic. Beyoncé is voicing Simba’s friend and eventual love interest, Nala. The Grammy winner is also singing an updated version of Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”

Speaking with the Keep It podcast, Billy Eichner, who voices Timon, revealed he cried after watching a rough cut of the movie. “I’ve heard her sing ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight?’ with Donald Glover and I’m telling you, it’s f**king good. And that was never my favorite song to be totally honest… I liked it when Elton John sang it,” he said. “I love Elton John. I don’t want to give too much away about that, they’re very, they do not want us talking about it. I will just say that honestly, it made me cry and I was not expecting that.”

Woodstock prepares for Jay-Z.

Jay-Z is scheduled to headline the three-day Woodstock 50 Music and Arts Fair on Aug. 18. The 50th anniversary celebrating the legendary outdoor music festival is drawing a bit of unwarranted controversy since the line-up includes quite a few hip-hop artists including Chance The Rapper and Common.

Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang isn’t listening to any of the critics. “It’s not something we’re planning on doing every year, the 50th is a special anniversary,” Lang explained to TMZ. “We’re hoping to engage people in social discourse and give them an incredible weekend, one that they’ll hopefully remember for the rest of their lives.”

They gave Jordan Peele a major shout-out.

Jordan Peele received the ultimate compliment from Jay-Z via his Roc Nation Twitter account last month when the rapper wrote, “For US by US. Congrats on the #1 movie in the world.” The opening weekend of Us earned $70 million at the box office.

Peele admitted in an interview with MTV News that he had doubts about this sophomore film after the success of 2017’s Get Out. It was Jay-Z who encouraged him to keep moving forward and told him, “It doesn’t matter You already did that.”

Boosted Louvre attendance because, “Ape*shit”.

It’s hard to believe that a music video increased visitor attendance at the Louvre museum of art in Paris, but when it’s Beyoncé and Jay-Z, it all makes sense. Their 2018 “Ape*shit” music video boosted attendance to a record 10.2 million people. That was a 25% increase over the previous year.

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, which was heavily featured in the clip, was already a must-see destination in France. Now, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have made her a next-level attraction.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex hasn’t had the easiest time transitioning from an actress to her demanding new role as a royal. The British press often blames Meghan for a rift between Prince William and Prince Harry and there are rumors of a strained relationship with her sister-in-law Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z decided to put an end to that nonsense. At the 2019 Brit Awards, they honored Meghan as their own princess during their video acceptance speech. The couple stood in front of a framed painting depicting Meghan as royalty. That’s quite the endorsement!

Threw the Oscars party of all Oscars parties.

The Oscars party of the year is no longer Vanity Fair or Madonna’s after, after-party — it’s Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s exclusive event at the Chateau Marmont. Approximately 150 guests were treated to gourmet food by Eleven Madison Park chef Daniel Humm with “caviar by the gallon.”

The press-free event kept the party even more secretive, but ET Online managed to reveal that socks and slippers were given out after a long night in heels and dress shoes. We wonder if guests like Mindy Kaling, Tiffany Haddish, Leonardo DiCaprio and Angela Bassett took them up on that offer?

Threw an epic Roc Nation pre-Grammys brunch.

This annual event takes place the day before the Grammys and it’s a celebration of black leaders in the music industry. This year, Janelle Monáe, Usher, Kevin Hart, Sean Combs and DJ Khaled were some of the big names who attended. Beyoncé shared the major moments of the event by releasing a short music video on Instagram that highlighted the day.
