Things to do around Chicago: The Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade, Pretty Lights and a horror-athon

This weekend, State Street will be filled with the signature downtown Chicago Halloween event. Plus Humanities Day in Hyde Park, David Sedaris at the Auditorium and the annual freakout fest Music Box of Horrors.

Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade

The annual family-friendly event produced by LUMA8 draws thousands of spectators to State Street. Expect almost 4,000 parade participants from some 90 arts organizations this year. Colorful costumes and masks, artwork, fire and circus arts, dance, acrobatics, theater and puppetry will all be part of the spectacle. Plus music from 12 marching bands and drumlines and music ensembles, including the South Side Jazz Coalition and the Lakeside Pride Music Ensembles.

Humanities Day

UChicago Humanities scholars will offer lectures, discussions and tours as they share their knowledge with the community. Learn about going to school in Babylonia, aliens and alienation, and Joan of Arc. Plus, you can take a guided tour of the Logan Center’s fall exhibition “Freedom’s Muse” or view three exhibitions at the Smart Museum of Art.

David Sedaris and Henry Rollins

Author David Sedaris and writer, actor and punk musician Henry Rollins will share the stage for one night in Chicago as part of their “An Evening with David Sedaris & Henry Rollins” tour. They’ll discuss their own works and answer audience questions.

Lil Uzi Vert

Bobby Berk

Jordan Rock

The Great Filipino Songbook

To celebrate Filipino American History Month, the SamaSama Project, a Chicago-based band, is hosting two shows this weekend. The cabaret shows will bring to life classic Filipino love songs with a modern twist. Plus, there will be Filipino food, art and apparel for sale in a pop-up presented by Everybody’s Market.
