This weekend offers a variety of low-cost and free activities in the Ames area.

Wheatsfield holds Tiny Deck Concert on Friday

From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Wheatsfield Cooperative will host Fred Love and The Bakersfield Brawl for a Tiny Deck Concert. An Ames local, Love is a singer, songwriter and guitarist, who released his DIY album “The Nine Days EP” in 2020. He will be joined by The Bakersfield Brawl, which features drummer Cal Rebuhn and bassist Pat Blair. Together they offer an electrified shot of cowpunk, honkytonk and Americana. Locally Grown Showcase holds summer market at The Cellar Winery

Featuring handmade products and wines, Locally Grown Showcase’s summer market is an opportunity to sip and shop indoors and out at The Cellar Winery in Madrid. More than 40 handpicked vendors will offer handmade, homegrown and vintage products. Enjoy local live music all day while you shop. Coffee will be available from Vintage Road Coffee. Breakfast and lunch items will be available from Iiawah food truck, Stallie's Sweets and Sisters in Cheese. The Parlor ice cream truck will also be on site. The market will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The winery is located at 2183 320th St., Madrid, and admission is free.

Make brooms the old-school way

The Ames History Museum offers a sweeping event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hoggatt School. Located at 18th and Burnett, the historic building is an 1860s-era one-room schoolhouse. Participants will learn how brooms were made in the Hoggatt School days through a hands-on demonstration. Learn more about Hoggatt School and see the full summer schedule at AmesHistory.org/Hoggatt. The programs are free and all ages are welcome. The main museum on Kellogg is currently closed for renovations and expansion.

Free pony rides for kids at Ames farmers’ market

The Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market is held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays all summer on the west side of Main Street. Local Iowa vendors and producers offer seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses, arts, crafts, fresh flowers, plants and much more. In addition to various vendors, the market also provides live local entertainment and free children’s activities. This week’s musician is Patricia Holly while the main kids’ activity is Meyers Pony Rides, both of which are free.

Noir features rockabilly and jazz this weekend

Noir Bar in downtown Ames will host Scott Eggleston and his rockabilly blues starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Jazz quartet Everett Hargrove Unit performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Located in the historic Sheldon Munn building, Noir offers a 1920s jazz club vibe and a bourbon-forward drink menu. Reservations can be made at NoirAmes.com.

Elvis is in the building Friday at the Camelot

Performer Joseph Hall is bringing his Elvis Rock N’ Remember tribute show to the historic Camelot Theater in downtown Nevada. The show starts at 7 p.m. Friday and benefits the renovation of the iconic building. Hall has been paying tribute to the legacy of Elvis Presley since 2006. He starred on NBC's “America's Got Talent” in 2008, making six TV appearances, viewed by more than 90 million people. He placed as one of the top 10 finalists. Tickets are $20 and $30 and are available at tix.com.

Alluvial features singer-songwriter Stilwell

Iowa singer-songwriter Scott Stilwell takes the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday at Alluvial Brewing Company. Stilwell’s folk songs are rooted in both fictional and non-fictional tales. Based on the concept that art is personal, Stilwell also weaves his own stories into the songs, inviting the listener into a shared experience. Admission is free.

Ames outdoor music scene continues to heat up

  • Roosevelt Summer Sundays’ free concert will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Roosevelt Park, with Molly Nova & The Hawks performing. There’s no charge, but free-will donations will be accepted.

  • Jesse and The Medicine Men perform from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday as Prairie Moon Winery and Vineyards hosts live music at its Corn Crib stage. A $5 admission includes a free glass of sangria. Brick-oven pizzas, charcuterie boards and a wide range of beverages are available for purchase.

  • The Cellar Winery near Madrid offers free live music on Fridays and Sundays. Haywire will perform from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The Sons of Gladys Kravitz will be featured from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
