Cursive isn't required in Indiana schools. Apparently they’re not teaching cursive at Abbott Elementary, either.

Viewers of the Feb. 7 season three premiere of the hit ABC sitcom "Abbott Elementary" saw the handwriting form get dumped.

After telling teacher Barbara Coleman about a school district mandate, school principal Ava Coleman rips the cursive penmanship poster from the classroom wall in the episode, informing her that ”cursive is no longer in the curriculum.”

The fictional Abbott Elementary is set in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but in the real world many classrooms no longer teach cursive writing to students.

A Pennsylvania state lawmaker in December introduced legislation that would require cursive handwriting to be taught in schools across the state. About two dozen states currently mandate the teaching of cursive writing in schools, with proposals in a handful of other states under consideration.

Indiana General Assembly: After years of pushing for a cursive mandate, this Indiana senator may finally get it done

There's a move to bring back cursive to Indiana schools.

Senate Bill 287, which includes an amendment from Sen. Jean Leising, R-Oldenburg, to mandate cursive writing in Indiana public schools, passed the Indiana Senate Feb. 6 with a 46-3 vote.

It would require all accredited elementary schools to include cursive handwriting in the curriculum.

Leising has fought to put cursive writing back in schools for nearly 13 years, introducing a bill seeking a mandate for cursive  instruction every year.
