These are the states with the most Christmas spirit

If it’s already beginning to look like Christmas in your hometown, it may have something to do with where you live. According to a recent study from GetCenturyLink, certain states are way more likely to get into the Christmas spirit than others. To figure out where Santa really comes to town, GetCenturyLink analyzed each state using a variety of metrics, falling under two categories: online activity and area culture.

For online activity, the team studied Google searches for a number of festive things including Christmas movies, gingerbread houses, wrapping paper, Christmas cards, Christmas ornaments and “Elf on the Shelf.” They also measured the number of Christmas songs streamed in each state as well as the number of tweets pertaining to Christmas put out in each state.

Area culture boiled down to the number of Christmas tree farms and the number of charitable donations made in the state. The results showed that the South and Midwest are both particularly festive. Coming in first with the highest Christmas spirit was Tennessee, followed by North Carolina, Utah, Ohio and Alabama. Rounding out the bottom five were states with overall warmer winters, including Arizona, Florida, California, Hawaii and — the state with the least Christmas spirit — Nevada.

It’s perhaps no surprise to Tennesseans that their state has the most Christmas spirit. Just this week, local law enforcement in Knoxville made news for pulling people over and then surprising them with gift cards. “The reason I stopped you is because you’re a good driver,” a cop is seen telling a U.S. Postal Service worker. “So, on behalf of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Academy Sports, I want to give you this $50 gift certificate.”

Measuring which states exhibit the most Christmas spirit, however, wasn’t the only information that GetCenturyLink shared in the study. Nationwide, there are 25 to 30 million Christmas trees sold each year — more than the population of Switzerland, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Another interesting fact shared by the team was the most expensive ornament, a $130,000 18-carat white gold cylinder with over 1,500 individual diamonds.
