There's a New 'The Devil Wears Prada' Musical On Its Way

In 2006 the worlds of comedy and fashion came together in holy matrimony with the release of The Devil Wears Prada starring Academy Award winning actresses Anne Hathaway and the GOAT Meryl Streep. The film, which dives deep into the luxurious decadence known as the fashion industry, was a major hit during its release and has gone on to become a beloved classic for many. And now in an attempt to capitalize on that success, there's a new Broadway musical being created based on the film.

Fans of the movie know that it was based on a novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, former personal assistant to fashion maven Anna Wintour (who many believe the story is actually about). Through many ups and downs, the main character Andy Sachs (Hathaway) is put to the test of her evil boss Miranda Priestly (Streep) and eventually comes out on top until she finally realizes that fashion world is too cutthroat for her liking. So she walks away from it all.

Now thirteen years later Prada is getting a second go round in the form of a play, and it's already creating quite a buzz. So far Buzzfeed News reports that two of the roles have been filled. Horrible boss candidate Miranda Priestly will be portrayed by Beth Leavel, a Tony award-winning actress whose career stretches back to the 1980s. In addition to Leavel's Priestly, the role of Andy Sachs has been snagged by fellow stars of the stage Taylor Iman Jones.

Jones is fairly new to the Broadway stage, having only appeared in two Broadway productions prior to nabbing her role in Prada. However, she has been honing her craft for quite some time. And Distractify reports that Jones realized she wanted to sharpen her skills before heading into her next big opportunity.

Her advice to aspiring stage performers is to know your strengths and weaknesses. "If you have a great voice but you’re not so great of a dancer, go to some dance classes. You don’t need to be the best dancer — sometimes, you just need to be 'good enough' and your other strengths will get you through," she said.

"You have your whole life ahead of you. You don’t need to be amazing at all the things right now. But every little bit and every day counts."

Looks like things are all falling into place for the Prada musical, but don't break out those credit cards to get early tickets just yet. Because unfortunately, this show won't be running for another year and a half with a pre-Broadway run at Chicago's CIBC Theatre from July 13, 2021, until Aug. 15, 2021. Still, this will surely be one of the musicals many fans will flock to see in droves once it debuts.
