Apr. 30—HIGH POINT — The High Point Theatre will come alive with "The Sound of Music" this week as High Point Community Theatre presents the iconic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

The popular musical will be presented in four performances — two evening shows and two matinees — Friday through Sunday at the High Point Theatre. On Thursday evening, the cast's final dress rehearsal will also be open to the public on a pay-what-you-can basis.

"The Sound of Music" tells the story of Maria, a young aspiring nun who becomes a governess for seven children of a widowed naval captain, Georg von Trapp. Maria brings joy and music to the household, teaching the children how to sing and helping them reconnect with their father. As the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

The musical, which earned five Tony Awards and five Oscars, features such beloved songs as "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "My Favorite Things" and "Do Re Mi." It runs approximately 2 1/2 hours, including intermission, and is appropriate for all ages.

"We are thrilled to bring this beloved musical to the High Point Theatre," director Matt Lowe said. "Our talented cast and creative team are ready to deliver an exceptional performance that will leave audiences feeling inspired and uplifted."

Performances will be Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. All performances are at the High Point Theatre, 220 E. Commerce Ave.

Tickets range from $20 to $25 and can be purchased online at www.hpct.net or by calling the theater box office at 336-887-3001.

The pay-what-you-can performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. This is the production's final dress rehearsal and is open to the public for a donation at the door. No playbills will be distributed that night, and seating is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
