‘The Walking Dead’: Jerry Really Wanted Carol to Have That Cobbler

Warning: This interview for the “New Best Friends” episode of The Walking Dead contains storyline and character spoilers.

How much do you love Ezekiel’s right-hand man Jerry, and how much do you love how badly he wanted to give Carol that big dish of cobbler in Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead?

Yahoo TV talked to the character’s wonderful portrayer, actor Cooper Andrews, about the delightful scene, what was really inside that dish, and how surprisingly difficult it is to carry such a goopy dessert in a backpack.

“When they’re walking up to Carol’s house, you notice that he has this giant backpack. What’s in that bag is an oversized thing of cobbler,” Andrews says. “Props looks at me. They’re like, ‘We thought it was supposed to be a few pieces of cobbler. Apparently they want a full Pyrex full of cobbler.’ Having to negotiate that thing was hilarious, and I did that on the spot, trying to shake it to normal when it was pulled out of the bag.”

And yes, there really was cobbler in the dish.

“Hell yeah, there was,” Andrews says with laugh. “It was a peach cobbler. We had two or three of them, because I don’t think they were rolling on it — maybe they were — but we were doing a rehearsal take, and I’m figuring out how to take this military bag off my back. The cobbler is in the bottom of it. I pull it out and it slushed, and it’s dripping out of this Pyrex container.

“They’re about to yell ‘Cut,’ and I just start eating a peach as it’s dangling from the glass. Melissa [McBride] is just doing her best not to crack up. She’s just standing there smiling the whole time, trying not to … You can hear the crew members start laughing, trying to hold their breaths in. Yes, it was real cobbler, and it went all over my fingers and in my mouth on the first take.”

So… was it good cobbler?

“Yes,” reveals Andrews, who confirms to Yahoo TV that we will see more of Jerry this season. “I’m lucky I didn’t have to eat a bunch, because cobbler can start getting to you. But it was very good. I think Carol will be happy with it. I definitely think she’ll be happy with it.”

Come back Tuesday for our full interview with Cooper!

The Walking Dead airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.
