Both The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah went live after Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate, and a consensus was reached: It was “so fuzzing boring” (Colbert, paraphrasing Tim Kaine’s odd adjective) and “boring as hell” (Noah). Colbert added that the debate between Sen. Tim Kaine and Gov. Mike Pence “was like a loaf of white bread pistol-whipping a jar of mayonnaise.”

But both men did come around to landing on the idea that Pence won the debate. Colbert’s guest Paul F. Tompkins explained that Donald Trump’s veep pick won purely on stature alone — mainly by looking like a statue. To be specific, that the crisply put-together Pence resembles a man on a trophy:

Over on The Daily Show, Noah reduced the brawling debate to “Stepdad vs. Real dad,” and gave the bout to Pence not by a knockout, but by a decision. He described Kaine as “scrappy,” but observed that “it’s not great to prepare your punchlines” in advance. Noah’s examples included Kaine sallies such as “You’re Donald Trump’s apprentice” and “Donald Trump can’t start a Twitter war with Miss Universe without shooting himself in the foot.”

I agree with them: It was boring. All of it — the debate and the jokes about the debate.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah airs weeknights at 11 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
