The Top 10 Highest-Grossing Domestic Films, Inflation Included

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already passed $935 million at the domestic box office, making it the highest-grossing domestic film of all time, surpassing previous record-holder Avatar.

But when you account for inflation by adjusting older films’ grosses based on average 2016 ticket prices, The Force Awakens ranks only 11th. In fact, eight of the 10 films ahead of it had grosses in the billions.

And at No. 1 is a classic film that might surprise you: It’s from 1939 and it doesn’t have the sort of high-octane action required of a contemporary blockbuster.
