Monumental moment: Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America all black women
This year marked a monumental moment as Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America are all black women. This is the first time in history black women hold the three titles simultaneously. Cheslie Kryst, Kaliegh Garris and Nia Franklin were featured on the cover of Essence magazine with “This Is America” captioned across the portrait.
A Brooklyn-based company, MSCHF, collaborated with Nike to create “Jesus Shoes” at a cost of $1,425. The Nike Air Max 97s were injected with holy water straight from the Jordan River, and include a steel crucifix attached to the laces. The shoes sold out in one minute. At the time of this article, the shoes are only available to bid on from the site Stock X, for around $3,900.
Simone Biles breaks record again
Simone Biles made history once again as Team USA won a gold medal in the world gymnastics championships this week. The medal was her 21st world championship medal, 15 of which are gold. The victory made Biles, 22, the most decorated female gymnast of all time.

This week the Supreme Court heard three cases on whether employers have a legal right to fire gay or transgender people. The way the Supreme Court chooses to define “sex” will affect the civil rights of LGBTQIA people. While the rulings are not expected until next year, it is expected to have an impact on the 2020 presidential campaign.
