The Many Devastating Box-Office Bombs of October

If you haven’t been keeping up with the box office lately, suffice it to say, there’s been more than a handful of flops, bombs, and train wrecks. Last weekend’s dismal showings for Burnt and Our Brand is Crisis were just the latest in a veritable box-office graveyard.

The trouble began with Pan, a tremendously expensive flop. The Peter Pan origin story nobody asked for has only made $31.8 million, but cost $150 million, and that’s before the expensive marketing.

Smaller films didn’t escape the trend, either. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse bowed with $1.7 million, a painful showing for even an indie of its scale. Then there was Rock the Kasbah, Jem, Steve Jobs, The Walk, The Last Witch Hunter, Crimson Peak, and so on.

Let’s end on a positive note here: The Martian has remained No. 1 for four of the last five weeks, facing virtually no serious competition. It racked up $183 million, after coming out of the gate with $54 million. Critics and audiences loved it, and movie lovers ended up with a sincere and optimistic sci-fi classic. And, hopefully, this week’s stateside release of Spectre will signal the end of a rough patch for our millionaire actor and producer friends.
