'The Knick' Season 2 Trailer: Thackery's on a Boat… and on Heroin

The clock is ticking, The Knick fans: Season 2 of Cinemax’s moody, ravishingly shot hospital drama finally arrives next month — and this new trailer gives us plenty to chew on while we wait to go into surgery.

Set to the insisting sound of a ticking clock, the trailer heralds the return of Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen) from rehab, where he went at the end of Season 1 to treat his cocaine addiction… with heroin! (God bless the limited medical knowledge we had back in 1900.)

As co-creator Michael Begler tells Yahoo TV, Thackery’s not exactly on the road to recovery when we see him again in Season 2: “He’s gonna be more manic, more paranoid. Everything we left him with has only gone downhill.”

Thackery clearly disagrees, though:

Thackery’s nurse/Season 1 love interest Lucy Elkins (Eve Hewson) isn’t buying it: She’s moved on, dancing with a new young man and telling Thackery, “You betrayed me… I’m getting what I want.”

We see flashes of Thackery sprinting through the hospital in his white shoes; ambulance driver Cleary (Chris Sullivan) involved in an underground wrestling club; Cornelia (Juliet Rylance) caught up in some kind of riot; a doctor’s face (not Thackery’s, we don’t think) going up in flames during surgery — and a haunting final shot of Thackery tied up in the bowels of a sailboat, yelling for help.

Did we mention Steven Soderbergh is back to direct every episode again? Is it October yet?

Season 2 of The Knick premieres Friday, Oct. 16 at 10 p.m. on Cinemax.
