'The Good Place' Creator Mike Schur Relives His Most Awesomely Bad Pitch Meeting

As The Good Place heads into its final three episodes of Season 1, creator Mike Schur stopped by Yahoo TV for a Facebook Live interview. As you can tell from the clip above, in which Schur shares the story of the time he and Neal Brennan (Chappelle’s Show) pitched a film idea to a hungover movie exec while Schur was a writer at Saturday Night Live in the late ’90s, it covers a lot of his career.

Watch the full interview below to hear how Parks and Recreation was pitched by Schur and The Office‘s Greg Daniels as a show centered on the strength of Leslie and Ann’s friendship (14:00), his thoughts on that massive Brooklyn Nine-Nine fall finale cliffhanger involving Chelsea Peretti’s Gina (21:24), and his response to fans’ questions about why there are no children or senior citizens in The Good Place‘s version of the afterlife (11:03) and his favorite flavor of frozen yogurt (16:17, but spoiler: like Ron Swanson, he now prefers ice cream).

As for what we can tease about tonight’s episode of The Good Place, Ted Danson’s Michael will learn about the surprise union of Jason (Manny Jacinto) and Janet (D’Arcy Carden), a ceremony which Schur delights in reliving with us at the beginning of the chat. And yes, we will meet Shawn — the judge in the afterlife that everyone fears, who will ultimately decide whether Kristen Bell’s Eleanor remains in The Good Place or heads to The Bad Place — by the end of the half hour. Schur promises we’ll recognize the actor playing him from another of his shows. Guesses?

The Good Place airs Jan. 12 at 8:30 p.m. on NBC. The one-hour season finale airs Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
