The Funny Thing People Are Shouting at ‘American Crime Story’ Star Cuba Gooding Jr.

In 1996, Cuba Gooding Jr., playing star wide receiver Rod Tidwell in Jerry Maguire, said four simple words: “Show me the money.” The scene in which they were uttered quickly became one of the most iconic movie moments in history, and that phrase was repeated over and over again, especially to Gooding himself. Now, 20 years after Jerry Maguire was released, people are still repeating that phrase — even to Gooding. “Do people still come up to you when they see you and go, ‘Show me the money?’” asked host Michael Strahan on Monday’s episode of Live With Kelly & Michael. “All the time. All the time,” Gooding replied.

Now, though, with his role as O.J. Simpson on American Crime Story, he’s getting a new twist on the line. Gooding told Strahan and Kelly Ripa, “The funniest thing, last night I was at the bar and I heard somebody yell out, ‘Hey, O.J.!’ He goes, ‘Show me the money!’ I was like, ‘Really? Really? Really?’ I was like, ‘What?!’” As the laughter died down, Gooding followed up with, “So I killed that man. I shot him. I’m kidding! I’m kidding!”
