The Endearing Reason Why John Cho’s Kid Hasn’t Seen His ‘Star Trek’ Films

Star Trek Beyond cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and John Cho were guests on The Talk Friday. In the third installment of the rebooted sci-fi franchise, audiences learn that Cho’s character, Sulu, is a father. In real life, Cho himself is a dad to two young kids. Co-host Aisha Tyler asked Cho if his 8-year-old son, Kage, had seen any of his Star Trek movies. It turns out there’s a very sweet reason why Cho is hesitant to show them to his kid.

“He’s visited [the film] set,” Cho said. “He hasn’t seen the movies because he’s very squeamish about violence. He screams loudly when people die.”

“That’s an appropriate reaction, by the way,” Tyler said, laughing. “Yeah,” agreed Cho. “We can’t watch any Disney movies because they always start out with mama dying.” The action star then proceeded to scream loudly before pretending to scramble to turn off a DVD player.

Cho at first didn’t tell his son that he’s an actor. “He kind of figured it out eventually because people would come up and slap my back and stuff,” he said. “I think he just thought that the world was an extremely friendly place. Which is good. I went with it. He’s also superdumb.”
