'The Divergent Series: Allegiant' Teaser: Tris Meets Scary Jeff Daniels

Fans of The Divergent Series will have three gut reactions to the new Allegiant teaser trailer above: First, Chicago’s O'Hare Airport did some serious renovations. Second, Shailene Woodley’s hair is sure growing out nicely. And third, Jeff Daniels! Something tells us you want to know a little more about that last one.

When the teaser kicks off, we’re reminded of where we started in Divergent — with a dystopian city of Chicago divided into factions and led by a power-hungry Kate Winslet. We’re also reminded where last year’s sequel Insurgent left off — with the system broken down and the revelation of life beyond the walls of the city. Our main six (Tris, Four, Caleb, Christina, Peter, and Tori) were last seen running towards the wall. Now we get to see them climb it (which looks pretty cool, by the way) and peek out over the other side. The fringe, as it’s called, appears red, burnt, and barren (apparently it’s also the perfect spot for a Tris/Four makeout sesh)… until we see a militant group approaching in matching camo.

After a few booms and flying saucers, Tris finds herself in a bright white outfit in a bright white room being approached by Daniels’s David, the leader of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare stationed in what used to be O'Hare Airport. Despite the fact that he’s Jeff Daniels and says it’s “a pleasure to finally meet” Tris, don’t be fooled. Nothing good ever happens in bright white rooms in dystopian stories. “You saved the city. Help me save the world,” he says. Unfortunately, we’ll soon learn that his definition of “saving” involves dividing people into more groups — this time the GD (Genetically Damaged) and GP (Genetically Pure). If that makes your stomach churn, it should.

Still, Daniels is always great when he’s playing slippery, so that’s worth looking forward to when The Divergent Series: Allegiant hits theaters in March. That, and Woodley’s new hair.
