The cheapest castles on sale in Scotland
You may be able to bag a castle in Scotland for well under a million pounds, but depending on which one you go for, you may need to put in a lot of restoration work.
Pieteadie Castle
A castle in Fife, Scotland covering 3.8 acres, with a fruit orchard, paddock and tennis court is up for sale for £225,000 ($300,558).
However, Piteadie Castle is described as ruined, though it has “restoration potential,” according to estate agent Savills who have listed the property.
It is believed to originate from the late 15th century and was partially rebuilt in the 17th century with the addition of a stair tower.
Fetteresso Castle
Next up on the list is a 14th century castle situated west of the fishing town of Stonehaven, up for £475,000, and unlike Piteadie comes in great condition.
Fetteresso Castle was rebuilt in 2005 and has been “modernised to provide beautifully appointed living accommodation,” according to its Zoopla listing.
Some of its features include an “elegant staircase with high ceilings and feature light fittings” plus “a spacious formal living space with period features and an “open working fireplace.”
Fa’side Castle
Fa'side Castle in East Lothian would also count as one of the cheaper options if you are looking to become the owner of a castle. However, you will need to spend upwards of a million pounds for this one, as Savills lists it as accepting offers over £1.7m.
But you will certainly be getting what you pay for. The listing describes Fa’side as “an outstanding historic 14th century castle with panoramic views over the Lothians and the Forth Estuary.”
Included in its features is the “Great Hall,” “a classic feature of a castle of this age.”

“This magnificent old room has an original stone built fireplace with a log burning stove. Beside the window there are stone window seats built into the thick castle walls,” the listing said.
Within the grounds of the castle is a 17th century barn, which was converted in 1996 into two cottages, Woodside and Gateside.
Brechin Castle
And finally, for a cool £3m, still on the cheaper end castle-wise, you could buy Brechin Castle. It comes with eight reception rooms, 16 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and five estate cottages.
“On the site of a much older fortress belonging to the Scottish Kings, the present house was last reconstructed in the early 1700s and incorporates part of the original castle dating back to the 13th century,” Savills said in the listing.
