The Brazilian 'Billy Elliot'? Watch 'Trash' Trailer, a Buoyant Boyhood Adventure

Three-time Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader) is revisiting his high-spirited roots with Trash, about three Brazilian boys whose mysterious garbage heap discovery, a wallet, sets them on the adventure of their lives. You can watch the exclusive trailer above.

Starring Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen, and Brazilian actors Wagner Moura and Selton Mello, Trash has amassed warm reviews since it started screening last fall. “Daldry rediscovers the upbeat oomph that powered his debut feature Billy Elliot,” writes Mark Kermode of The Guardian.

The boys, who find themselves running from police while trying to decode the secret of the wallet, are played by newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis, and Gabriel Weinstein. According The Hollywood Reporter, the young actors represent the movie’s passionate center — “whose antics provide a solid level of action-packed dramedy.”

Trash opens in select theaters Oct. 9.
