The Best in Late-Night Music: Week of Sept. 21
Music that reaches for the higher ground. It was on full display, acted the airwaves. Maybe it’s the Pope-effect on late-night TV.
This week’s late-night winner: Chrissie Hynde
The Pretenders founder did not perform this week, but in making the rounds for her autobiography, Reckless, she was a much-needed reminder of what it means to be a rock star who isn’t overly media-trained, afraid of being impolitic, nor concerned about making the perfect soundbite. She’s the real deal. Long may she live.
MONDAY
Circa Waves on Conan
Four dudes from Liverpool with moptop hair and catchy tunes. I’m not suggesting Circa Waves-mania, but damn, they’re sunny. Hold it together, guys. The future is bright. (WATCH THEM HERE)
TUESDAY
Raury on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Raury travelled from his native Atlanta for his TV debut. It was glorious. The 19-year-old has the soul of an old griot raising ghosts from days long gone. Spellbinding. After the hair raising on your neck, order his debut. It come out Oct. 16.
WEDNESDAY
Waters on Last Call with Carson Daly
Last Call is finally running new episodes again. Let the deep musical discovery begin again — and let your minds be blown by Waters. Singer-songwriter Van Pierszalowski formed Waters in 2011 out of the ashes of California indie darlings Port O’Brien. Waters nails anthemic flower-powerpop and brings it to super giddy singalong heights. (WATCH HIM HERE)
THURSDAY
Jill Scott on Jimmy Kimmel Live
After a four-year absence, Jill Scott released her fifth studio
album this past July. She’s been picking up steam since summer, hitting Kimmel’s outdoor stage like a 21st-century Etta James. “Run, Run, Run” is no-nonsense blues sung by a woman who knows who wears the pants.
