'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' Almost Didn't Get Made
Steve Carell was on Conan Tuesday and talked about how The 40-Year-Old Virgin almost didn’t get made. “We were doing a scene on location somewhere,” Carell told host Conan O’Brien. “Judd Apatow, the director, came in and said we had a break in shooting … and said, ‘Universal wants to talk to us. They’re shutting us down.’ And this was on a Friday afternoon.”
The reason they wanted to shut down was supremely insulting. “They said, ‘We’ve been watching footage,’” Carell continued. “And we had only been shooting for five days. [Universal said,] ‘And we’ve been watching footage, and you look like a serial killer.’”
The footage was rather innocent. “It was me riding my bike with a weird helmet, and it was me walking down the street and seeing suggestive posters,” laughed Carell. “And just that week compiled, they went, ‘No, no, no, no.’ This is not a comedy.”
“You must have been terrified,” said Conan. “I was so bummed out,” Carell admitted. “I thought that’s it — that was the big shot, and it wasn’t going to work out. And then, thankfully, we started up on Monday and finished shooting.”
