That's Sir Christopher Nolan to you, peasant

Ensuring that he finally has something to talk with Sir Michael Caine about the next time they end up running into each other, Christopher Nolan has just been knighted for his contributions to film. Both Nolan and his wife, producer Emma Thomas, have been selected to receive the honor from the British monarchy who, we can only assume, really liked it when Nolan made that airplane explode real good in Tenet.

Per the BBC, Nolan and Thomas are to receive a knighthood and damehood, respectively, which grants them the right to add several extra letters to the backs of their names, one set of complementary swords apiece, and access to exclusively discounted seat upgrades when flying with British Airways. [Note to editor: Remember to look up whether any of that is actually true, or if we just dreamt it, before publishing.] The announcement of the honors was a bit unorthodox, actually, since the British royals usually dole these things out twice a year, on New Year’s, and then the monarch’s birthday; the current status of King Charles, who’s missing royal duties at the moment due to currently undergoing cancer treatment, may have led to the alteration of normal procedures.

Nolan and Thomas were both born in London, and met in their first week of university, getting married in 1997. Nolan gets the lion’s share of attention for their work, obviously, serving as director and at least co-writer on most of their movies. But Thomas has served as a producer on every one of those films, and has been credited for setting up and running “notoriously harmonious” sets; she’s often noted as being one of the key reasons Nolan has a reputation for making very big movies that nevertheless arrive on-time and under budget.
