That Time Matthew Perry Thought He Hung Out With M. Night Shyamalan

Matthew Perry joined Ellen on Monday, and he told a story of mistaken identity and the night he thought his life was about to change forever. Perry had briefly met the hottest director in Hollywood at the time, M. Night Shyamalan, when he presented Bruce Willis with the award for Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Drama. Willis won the award for his role in Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense. About six months later, Perry was out with some friends when a man approached him and said hello.

Perry thought the man was M. Night Shyamalan and invited him to join the group. After his friends left, Perry found himself hanging out with the man for what ended up being a few hours, all the while making him laugh and thinking this could be his chance to become a major movie star.

“I was convinced that this night was going to be a life-changing night for me and I was going to become a gigantic movie star as a result of this night. Like M. Night Shyamalan will make the next movie and the trick ending will be me,” Perry said.

It wasn’t until later when he finally worked up the courage to talk business that he found out the man was in fact not M. Night Shyamalan.
