Texas Tech's four-legged mascot Centennial Champion will not perform in his traditional pre-game run this weekend for the Red Raiders' homecoming game against Kansas State due to inflammation.

The Masked Rider will continue to stand on the sideline throughout the game and participate in all homecoming activities including Friday's parade and bonfire, according to a news release from the university. Both the Masked Rider and Centennial Champion will be available at Raider Alley for pictures prior to the game at 4 p.m. The game is set for 6 p.m. at Jones AT&T Stadium.

According to the release, veterinarians expect Centennial Champion to return to his normal duties for the following home game against Texas Christian University on Nov. 2.

Centennial Champion was announced as Tech's horse mascot in September 2022.

Texas Tech and United Supermarkets announced the name of the new horse after holding a competition in the summer of 2022 for naming the Masked Rider's horse.

Before the now 10-year-old quarter horse was even chosen, Sam Jackson, a professor in the Davis College and a member of the committee tasked with selecting the horse and the name, told the A-J that Centennial, formerly known as Buzz, had to meet specific requirements, including being comfortable around a lot of people.
