Did Texans' Jadeveon Clowney send not-so-subtle message with Halloween costume?
Houston Texans players likely aren’t going to forget anytime soon that team owner Bob McNair referred to them as “inmates” at a recent meeting between NFL owners as they discussed player protests.
Case in point: Jadeveon Clowney.
The defensive end, who must lead the Texans’ pass rush after the team lost J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus to season-ending injuries earlier this month, wore an orange jumpsuit to a Halloween party.
Houston’s head of communications, Amy Palcic, told Chron.com on Tuesday that there “was no hidden meaning behind his Halloween costume. He was not taking a ‘shot’ at anyone. It was just that – a costume at a Halloween party.”
Assuming that’s true, it’s certainly interesting timing from Clowney.
The Texans have issued two statements from McNair, and the owner met with players on Saturday morning to express his regret.
Players remained deeply bothered by McNair’s words, however, and a majority of the team kneeled during the national anthem in Seattle on Sunday, including Clowney, the team’s first-round pick in 2014.
