Who was the Texans’ biggest steal in the 2021 NFL draft?

The Houston Texans had a five-man draft class, once more matching their smallest draft class ever from 2020. With a dearth of selections, it would actually be harder to identify who might be a steal for the AFC South club, especially since they did not begin picking until No. 67 overall in Round 3.

However, new general manager Nick Caserio was able to maximize the club’s value with their eight total selections, distilling them into the five-man class that was gathered at the end of the 2021 NFL draft.

According to Luke Easterling of the Draft Wire, Miami tight end Brevin Jordan was the biggest steal for the Texans in the draft.

What Caserio appreciated about Jordan and why the Texans drafted him with the 147th overall pick in Round 5 was because of his abundance of playing time with the Hurricanes.

“Played since his freshman year at Miami,” said Caserio. “He started a number of games, productive player in the passing game. Decent with the ball in his hands, runs hard, has some straight-line speed. Again, had pretty good production as a pass catcher.”

Jordan caught caught 105 passes for 1,358 yards and 13 touchdowns in his 26 games with Miami, earning a total of 108 snaps throughout his playing career from 2018-20.

Caserio is hopeful Jordan can bring that same production and create competition at tight end.

Said Caserio: “I’d say when you look at the team, it’s really about competition and it’s about creating opportunities. The players are going to create their opportunities. We have to get them on the team, however they get them here, right, you draft them, you sign them in free agency, you trade for them, whatever the case may be. Then once they’re here, ultimately the competition is going to dictate who plays, who doesn’t play and what their role is.”

Jordan may be the Texans’ steal of the draft. When the rookie minicamp commences on May 14, he will have to become the hidden gem on Houston’s roster.
