How many breweries are in Detroit?

There are 10 breweries based in the City of Detroit proper. One of them, Traffic Jam & Snug — the oldest operating microbrewery in the city — is closed indefinitely as it recovers from a May 2022 fire. The others: Atwater Brewery and Taphouse, Brew Detroit, Batch Brewing, Eastern Market Brewing, Detroit Beer Co., Lagerhaus No. 5, Brewery Faisan, Motor City Brewing Works and Nain Rouge Brewing. Other breweries based elsewhere in Michigan have taprooms in the city, including Jolly Pumpkin and Tenacity Brewing.

The Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers 2023 Restaurant of the Year was not a restaurant. Who was the winner?

Ladder 4 Wine Bar. With an outstanding wine bar, a commitment to ethically and sustainably sourced wines and an elevated culinary menu, it is a pillar of all-around excellence. The wine bar set out to elevate the reputation of bar food. To assert that it can be upscale and filling — more than charcuterie boards and cheese plates, salted nuts and bitter chocolates for pairing with red wine.

What is the oldest dive bar in Detroit?

While there are multiple historic Detroit bars operating to this day, 2-Way Inn claims to be the oldest. Serving patrons since 1876, the building has also operated as a hotel, general store, dance hall, brothel, speakeasy, dentist office and even a village jail over the years. You must ring a bell to enter, but once you do, you'll be taken back in time.

A Highland Park family has roasted coffee for five generations — what is the name of this coffee roaster?

Becharas Brothers Coffee. The company was started by Nicholas Becharas and his brother, George, who emigrated from Greece and set up shop in Chicago. They moved to Detroit in the 1920s and found success supplying their Royal York collection across the Midwest. Dean Becharas, who was Nicholas Becharas' nephew, took over the company in the 1970s. Today, Dean Becharas' children — Nick Becharas Sr., CEO/president; Dean Becharas Jr., COO; Demi Becharas, vice president of administration; and Stephanie D'Annunzio, who recently retired — have been working at the company, which also has 22 employees.

Bonus question: What is the name of the table used to smell and taste different blends during a coffee tasting?

The cupping table. Cupping is like wine tasting, but for the coffee blends being roasted each day.
