Tesla enthusiast video shows Model 3 production line in motion
Much of the news about Tesla lately has focused on the company's struggles to increase the speed of production of its new Model 3 sedan. Elon Musk has famously characterized the car as being "deep in production hell," and the company has had to push back its target of building 5,000 units per week by three months after revealing it made only 260 of the mass-market sedans during the third quarter.
Now we have our first look at part of the production line at Tesla's factory in Fremont, Calif. It comes from Tesla Motors Club user int-veh, who uploaded a clip of the production line in motion as an animated GIF.
It's hard to deduce much from the brief clip, which shows what appear to be two Model 3 bodies in motion through a window. Musk has said the production bottleneck mainly involves battery modules at its Gigafactory in Nevada, not the Fremont plant. But a bottleneck in production of the electric vehicle's powertrain would clearly cause problems further down the production process.
Tesla has reportedly said its bodyshop welding and final assembly lines are now capable of 500 units per week, according to short burst tests. Tesla says it has more than 500,000 reservations for the car, which starts at $35,000 before electric-vehicle tax incentives. So far, sales have been limited to employees, family members of employees and company insiders.
If nothing else, this new footage is confirmation that Tesla is working hard to try and fill those orders.
