The actor died on Monday after a recent illness at the age of 61

Stars across Hollywood are reacting to the death of Andre Braugher.

PEOPLE confirmed that the actor, known for his roles in shows such as Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, died on Monday after a recent illness at the age of 61.

One of the first to speak out was Terry Crews, who worked with the actor on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

"Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon," Crews, 55, wrote on Instagram.

Crews praised Braugher for teaching him "so much" and expressed that he was "grateful for the experience of knowing you."

"Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like," he added.

Niecy Nash-Betts also reflected on working with Braugher on the hit sitcom, and wrote in her own Instagram post, "RIP @andrebraugher 🥺 we so much fun on set of @brooklyn99 when I played his sister. Just a real cool guy….. my deepest condolences to his friends & family 🙏🏾."

Marc Evan Jackson, who played Braugher's onscreen husband in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, shared a touching photo of the two on X, formally known as Twitter, and wrote, "O Captain. My Captain."

The official Peacock and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Instagram accounts shared a joint post that read, "Always our Captain. We love you, Andre."

Shonda Rhimes, who produced his last project The Residence, shared a photo of Braugher on Instagram and wrote that she was "deeply saddened by the news" of his death.

"I mourn not only the loss of an extraordinary actor but, more profoundly, the departure of a warm and kind soul. His talent was undeniable, but it was his genuine kindness that truly set him apart. Rest well," Rhimes added.

The Wire creator David Simon wrote on X, "Andre Braugher. God. I've worked with a lot of wonderful actors. I'll never work with one better. Stunned and thinking of Ami and his sons and so many memories of this good man that are now a blessing. But too damn soon."

Nick Cannon shared a black-and-white image of himself and Braugher on Instagram. "🕊️ A Brilliant and Beautiful Soul! Now Set Free! To be absent from the Body is to be present with the Lord! Rest in Paradise King🙏🏾," Cannon wrote.

Ryan Michelle Bathe shared an article about the news on X and wrote, "May he rest well. My heart goes out to his loved ones." Bathe is married to Sterling K. Brown, who guested on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Hack, which also starred Braugher.

Arrow star Kirk Acevedo shared a photo of Braugher on X and wrote, "Andre Braugher, Rest in peace. Loved watching him work. Anytime he entered a scene, he commanded attention. Terrible loss and taken away from his family and friends way too soon" Also on X, Sheryl Lee Ralph wrote, "This really shook me! RIP Andre!"

In his tribute, Al Roker shared a photo with Braugher on Instagram and remembered him for his "honesty and integrity."

"So sad hearing about the passing of @andrebraugher at 61 years old. His honesty and integrity shone through every role he portrayed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. #andrebraugher," Roker added.

Throughout his career, Braugher received 11 Emmy nominations. He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide and secured his second win for the 2006 miniseries Thief.
