Actor and America's Got Talent host Terry Crews recently addressed concerns about diversity and racism on the set. In an exclusive interview with US Weekly, Crews says he never experienced anything similar to what his former co-host Gabrielle Union has reported.
" It was not my experience. . .It was the best experience I ever had in my entire life."
Crews will continue on as an America's Got Talent host and also told US Weekly that he does not believe there to be any concerns about diversity on the set.
“I have never been in a more diverse place in 20 years of entertainment, so what can I say?” Crews said.
Did Crews Hang Gabrielle Union Out To Dry?
Apparently, some think that Terry Crews should be standing in solidarity the Gabrielle Union amid the controversy. Crews did address Gabrielle's departure as a co-host publicly. He tweeted that Union 'would be missed.' This response was not enough for spectators. It sparked backlash via social media as some think his response was basic and lacked luster.
The question looms: how does one express concern and care while still keeping their job? Crews seems to be more than content with his role on America's Got Talent.
Co-Host Gabrielle Union's Claims
Controversy over possible racism and sexism on the set of NBC's America's Got Talent was sparked when Gabrielle Union's contract was not renewed for the next season. According to US Weekly Union claims her contract was not renewed after she urged AGT producers to report a racist joke allegedly uttered by Jay Leno. Union also alleges that she had been told on several occasions that her hairstyles were "too black."
The claims sparked an investigation by talent union SAG-AFTRA. In response to the claims, NBC released the following statement to US Weekly:
"America’s Got Talent has a long history of inclusivity and diversity in both our talent and the acts championed by the show. The judging and host lineup has been regularly refreshed over the years and that is one of the reasons for AGT’s enduring popularity. NBC and the producers take any issues on set seriously.”
Crews Is An Ally
Crews is no stranger to speaking up in the face of injustice and controversy. He made headlines back in 2017 during the peak of the #MeToo movement when he took to Twitter to share an uncomfortable experience he had in a public setting with a Hollywood executive.
His claim caused a media frenzy and Crews shed new light on the sexual misconduct issue in Hollywood since we rarely hear men come forward to speak up on harassment when they are on the receiving end of it.
On January 6, America's Got Talent: Champions aired and Crews continues to be one of the show's hosts. The show must go on as the old adage goes.
