What's Tennessee's favorite fast food joint? The answer is a little (dough) nuts

Nearly 40% of American adults junk out on fast food on any given day. That number skews higher with young adults, meaning more 20-somethings are adjusting to life on their own with cheeseburgers. Or, in the case of Tennesseans, with fluffy fried doughnuts, which is ... frankly understandable.

Writers of a budgeting blog created by lending company CashNetUSA found the best-known fast-food chains, and then analyzed their popularity through Google Maps reviews and ratings across the country.

Their key findings pointed to a few surprises, including a lot of Domino's hate (we say it's fine in a pinch — mostly if you have kids). A full 21 major cities rated the pizza giant the lowest among its chain brethren, the worst of any restaurant.

Chick-fil-A, with its seemingly random capitalization (the capital-A stands for "grade A;" you learn something every day), was the favorite overall in a whopping 31 states, despite the controversy that's swirled around it in recent years.

But not Tennessee, which somewhat inexplicably prefers Shipley's Do-Nuts, the only state in the Union to make that decision. If you're in the Nashville area, your closest Shipley's is at 2540 Lebanon Pike.

But it's also worth noting that, when the data was narrowed down to major cities, Nashville went against the rest of the state and preferred Chick-fil-A as its favorite overall fast food restaurant.

When you refine the results by type of fast food, Tennessee prefers its chicken from Chick-fil-A, as does every other state in the nation except South Dakota, which bucks the trend and goes for Popeye's.

For burgers, Tennessee prefers Culver's, while much of the rest of America rates Five Guys as the favorite burger joint. For Mexican, Tennessee loves Moe's. For pizza, it's Papa Murphy's.

As for what the state hates? Tennessee thinks Wingstop is for the birds. We say "no thanks" to McDonald's burgers. Tennessee also doesn't like Dunkin' and thinks the pizza at Papa John's is the pits. Regarding the latter, Nashville is aligned with the rest of the state, putting Papa John's at the bottom of the pizza barrel. Check out the rest of the findings here.
